A Pastel Garden Wedding at the Saint Louis Art Museum
It might be a new year but we aren’t finished reminiscing about 2021, and today’s featured couple might look familiar because this is their second appearance on the blog! Krissy & Chris were one of our many couples who had to postpone their wedding in 2020. They decided to host an intimate celebration on their original date (you can check out their beautiful micro wedding here), and they finally got their full celebration at the end of this past summer!
I remember chatting with Krissy’s mom Mary Ann when she initially called to inquire about wedding flowers back in the spring of 2019 (!!!) She described Krissy’s vision of a ceremony at the Jewel Box, bringing a garden-like feel into the St. Louis Art Museum, and having cocktail hour on the plaza out front. While the design of the day evolved over time, the essence of that original vision held true and came together beautifully. After more than two years of planning it was exciting to finally bring this wedding to life and give Krissy & Chris the day they’d been dreaming of for so long!
One of the fun things about working with so many of our clients twice (thanks pandemic) was getting to design two bouquets for many of them! Krissy’s first bouquet was a scaled back version of the cascade she planned to carry; the color palette and garden feel were the same, but we wanted to save the WOW moment for the big wedding. (I know postponing was super stressful, but I think getting to carry two versions of your bouquet and rocking two gowns has to be a good silver lining!)
Due to the craziness that became venue scheduling in 2021, the ceremony for wedding day #2 was moved from the Jewel Box to the World’s Fair Pavilion. This was a welcome change for our team because the lush floral arch we planned to create for the ceremony had to be designed completely onsite, but the timing at the Jewel Box is extremely tight. Had the ceremony not moved, we would have had to design the arch on the back loading dock at the Jewel box and move it into place! (I’m tired just thinking about that). Thankfully the design team was able to take all the time they needed at the World’s Fair Pavilion and created the most stunning floral archway. In another happy change of plans, the ceremony moved from the pavilion’s patio into the shade due to heat, and the juxtaposition of the floral arch sitting in the archway of the building couldn’t be more perfect. Sometimes things just work out for the best!
Let’s be honest, this gorgeous arch got to shine at the World’s Fair Pavilion in a way it never would have at the Jewel Box! Things happen for a reason, people.
Now, before we get into the reception photos, I just have to give a shoutout to the AMAZING vendor team because I don’t think it’s an exaggeration to say we all lost some sleep over the logistics of this one! The Art Museum has a very tight setup window since the space is open to the public until 5pm, and there was A LOT of stuff happening for this reception. But we did it! Teamwork truly makes the wedding dream work.
On to the pretty stuff! As I mentioned, in our very first conversation Mary Ann told me that Krissy wanted to bring a garden into the Art Museum, and I think we succeeded! Because of the towering ceilings and grand feel of Sculpture Hall, tall centerpieces were a must. To add interest to the space, two tall designs were created, and a lush low piece was mixed in as well. The head table anchored the far side of the room with long elevated pieces, and on the opposite end of the room floral urns on the bar greeted guests as they entered from cocktail hour outside. By incorporating so many tall centerpieces, the space actually felt quite intimate despite the ceiling height.
This wedding was full of show-stopping moments (the ceremony arch was my personal favorite), but we have to take a moment to appreciate the CAKE. I still get nervous looking at photos of it, because not only was it five tiers, but it was five tiers of heavy cheesecake. Watching Sandra place flowers between each tier was mildly terrifying (ask any vendor about potential wedding day nightmares and “the cake falling” often makes the list), but she placed each rose carefully and stepped back like what she had done was no big deal. It was truly impressive, like watching someone play a perfect game of Operation, and the final result was stunning.
Another gorgeous floral moment happened in Grigg Gallery where the band was staged. We accented Decorum’s white band facade with floral that seemed to be growing right up out of the floor, and carried the pastel palette into this part of the reception.
Krissy & Chris, we know your wedding planning journey wasn’t what you expected, but we loved working with you and are so thrilled to have been a part of both your wedding days! Cheers to many years of love and happiness!
